UN praises Pakistan for hosting millions of Afghan refugees

Jul 01, 2016 - 09:19

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The United Nations has praised Islamabad for extending the stay of Afghan refugees in Pakistaninfo-icon.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif allowed registered Afghan citizens to live in the country for another six months till December 31, 2016.

While hailing the decision, a UN spokesman told reporters in New York said their repatriation to Afghanistaninfo-icon should be governed by international laws.

Stephane Dujarris told reporters on Thursday: “We are thankful to the government and people of Pakistan for their generosity in hosting the Afghan refugees for such a long time.”

Pakistan hosts the worldinfo-icon’s second largest refugee population, with more than 1.5 million registered and about a million undocumented Afghan refugees.

As violence escalates in Afghanistan, the number of Afghans voluntarily returning home has declined this year.

Under the international humanitarian law, Dujarrissaid, the Afghan refugees should be repatriated with dignity.
