KANDAHAR (Pajhwok): Afghan Special Security forces destroyed a Talibaninfo-icon hideout and weapons and ammunition inside in the Maiwand district of southern Helmand province, preempting an imminent attack, an official said Wednesday.

Backed by air support, the Special Forces raided the hideout in Band-i-Taimur area where the rebels were planning a ‘deadly attack, Kandahar police spokesman Zia Durrani told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the operation was conducted to preempt and neutralize the threat. He said five Taliban militants were killed and five Kalashnikovs, three walkie-talkies, two motorcycles, one vehicle, and 10 packages of explosives and 20 Afghan National Army uniforms were destroyed in the raid.

Another nearly a dozen militants were captured alive with three Kalashnikovs, one rocket launcher and eight magazines, Durrani said.

Elsewhere in the district, militants attacked security posts in Bibank area but security forces pushed them back, said Durrani, adding that later a police operation resulted in defusing five freshly planted landmines on the district highway.
