6 rebels reconcile, as many arrested

PUL-I-ALAM/KANDAHAR (Pajhwok): Six rebels have joined the peace process in central Logar province and separately another six militants were arrested in southern Kandahar province, officials said Monday.

The militants reconciled in Azra district of Logar, the town’s administrative head, Hamidullah Hamid, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The former fighters included a local commander Mullahinfo-icon Anzor aka Lewani accused of preventing public projects, killing and other destructive activities.

They turned in three Kalashnikovs, a rocket launcher, a machinegun, 20 rocket shells, a pistol, a number of landmines, a walky-talky, security forces uniforms and some other materials, Hamid said.

Logar provincial council member and Azra resident Abdul Wali Wakeel told Pajhwok Afghan News that each militant’s joining of the peace process was beneficial to the country. He called on other militants to follow suit.

The Talibaninfo-icon also confirmed Mullah Anzor had joined the government, with the group’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahdi, saying Manzor was a criminal involved in murders, robberies and other and the Taliban had also ordered his detention.

Azra district is one of the most insecure districts of Logar province and the road connecting the town with the provincial capital, Pul-i-Alam, has been closed since past 14 years. 

In Kandahar province, the governor’s house in a statement said intelligence officials had arrested six militants involved in attacks on security posts in Shah Walikot, Maiwand, Zheri and Panjwai districts.

According to the statement, the detainees have hand in killing government officials and religious scholars after kidnapping them.
