10 held for inciting violence during Parwan protest

10 held for inciting violence during Parwan protest

Apr 19, 2011 - 16:20

CHARIKARinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): Ten people were detained on Tuesday on the charge of fomenting violence during Monday's protest that resulted in the killing of two demonstrators and injuries to 28 others in the central province of Parwan, an official said.

Hundreds of residents took to the streets against the detention of two religious scholars by foreign troops during an operation on Sunday night in the Bayan area on the outskirts of Charikar, the provincial capital.

The protest turned violent when armed men among the demonstrators fired at police. The detainees, aged between 20 and 30 years, belonged to the Bayan area, provincial police chief, Brig. Gen. Sher Ahmad Muldani, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He suspected militants among the protestors instigated youths to stage the demonstration.

The perpetrators should be sternly dealt with, said Sifatullah, who lost a brother in the violence. "My 17 years old brother was helper at a workshop. He was coming home when he was shot dead."
