Internet sofware being developed to solve social problems

Internet sofware being developed to solve social problems

Sep 11, 2015 - 17:02

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The technology firm TechNation has launched efforts at developing internet software for young innovators to solve some of the most challenging social and environmental problems.

The effort is part of “Innovation Labs Afghanistaninfo-icon” project which has been so far implemented in some provinces and a four-day training session in this regard involving 100 learners was concluded late on Thursday night in eastern Nangarhar province.

TechNation president Omar Mansoor Ansari told Pajhwok Afghan News the 100 youth, with girls constituting 37 percent of them, were trained in how to develop internet soft-wares.

He said the programme had earlier been carried out in Kabulinfo-icon and western Herat province and was concluded last night in Nangarhar’s capital Jalalabad with the aim to promote technology and social innovations.

“In this programme, we first train young innovators from every province and evaluate problems in their respective provinces and then help them learn how sofwares are developed.”

He said innovators from Nangarhar had prepared plans in eight sectors and those with better plans were being financially assisted besides training them in developing soft-wares.

“In this session, the learners pointed out problems in eight areas including security, healthinfo-icon, agricultureinfo-icon, environmentinfo-icon protection and others. They will develop apps (applications) and then offer social services.”

One of the programme participants, Abdul Basir, a science and technology student at Nangarhar University, told Pajhwok Afghan News they learned how sofwares were developed and how used in assisting people to resolve their social and environmental problems.

He said all the things they learned were very important because there existed many problems which needed applications for sending messages to assist people in finding solutions.

“Through apps, messages are sent to people that how can they participate in maintaining security and how can they cooperate in protecting the natural environment,” he said.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAIDinfo-icon)-funded Innovation Labs (iLabs) is a social innovation programme covering meetings of social and technology actors and is being implemented by the TechNation firm since 2012.
