Govt earns 83m afs in 10 days in new telecom taxes

Govt earns 83m afs in 10 days in new telecom taxes

Oct 03, 2015 - 21:00

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Abdul Razaq Wahidi on Saturday said the government earned more than 83 million afghanis in new taxes on cell phone subscribers since levied 10 days back.

Wahidi told journalists in Kabul a new system had been created to ensure transparency in collecting the new taxes.

“We assure our citizens that every penny they pay for using these services will be transferred to government coffers,” he said.

Wahidi said in the past 10 days since the taxes were imposed, 82.9 million afghanis had been transferred to the government, with 92 percent of the taxes coming from subscribers who had topped up their mobile phones.

He said such taxes on telecom services had been charged in all countries including Afghanistaninfo-icon’s neighbors.

Some subscribers, meanwhile, demanded transparency from government and said telecommunication companies should also bring down their charges.
