Afghan, US forces kill 20 insurgents in Logar

PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Up to 20 Talibaninfo-icon fighters have been killed during a joint operation by Afghan and US troopsin the central province of Logar, officials said on Tuesday.

The offensive was launched on Monday evening in Kharwar district, where20 fighters were killed and several others wounded as a result of US airstrikes, the provincial police chief said.

Brig. Gen. Daud Ahmadi told Pajhwok Afghan News: “The Taliban travelling in four pick-ups came under attack that left 20 militants dead.”

The district had been cleared of fighters in the wake of the operation, he said, adding a large amount of weapons and ammunition had been seized by security personnel.

After the Kunduz incident, the Talibanattempted to overrun Logar as well, but the securityforces launched operations and cleared Azra and Kharwar districts, Governor Mohammad Halim Fidaee said.

However, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid denied the fighters had suffered casualties in Kharwar and claimed they had killed seven security personnel and injured three others.

Elsewhere, seven weapons including a rocket launcher were seized during a separate operation in Babus area on the outskirts of Pul-i-Alam, the provincial capital.
