15 dead, 12 wounded in blast near Quetta polio centre

Jan 13, 2016 - 10:31

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Fifteen people were killed and a dozen others injured in a bomb blast near a polio vaccination centre in Pakistaninfo-icon’s southwestern Balochistan province on Wednesday, officials said.

Balochistan’s Home Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti told journalists at the site of the explosion in Quetta, the provincial capital: "The blast was apparently conducted by a suicide bomber."

Security personnel and rescue workers rushed to the scene, Satellite Town, soon after the attack. Security forces cordoned off the area, with bomb disposal squad experts trying to determine the nature of the attack.

Most of the victims were security officials, DawnNews reported, saying the casualties had been evacuated to Quetta Civil Hospital. An emergency has been declared at the hospital.

A three-day polio vaccination campaign, which began across Balochistan on Monday, concluded today. Around 2.4 million people, including more than 55,000 Afghan refugee children, are to be immunised.
