Unity govt committed to eradicating polio: Ghani

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani has said the unity government is committed to eradicating polio disease from Afghanistaninfo-icon and will be 100 percent successful in this regard.

The president was speaking to the governors of Kunar, Kandahar, Helmand, Uruzgan, Nimroz, Farah, Faryab and Herat provinces through a video conference, a statement from the president’s office said.

The public healthinfo-icon minister briefed in detail the meeting participants about anti-polio campaigns and programmes in different parts of the country.

He also shared his demands with the governors and other ministers attending the video chat, the statement added.

The president thanked the chief executive officer, Cabinet members, governors, the Worldinfo-icon Health Organisation and Gates’ foundation and all international partners who cooperating in the eradication of polio from the country.

Ghani asked local and foreign partners to evaluate the effectiveness, accountability and transparency of the polio eradication drive as impartial entities and identify problems and find solutions to them.

The president also instructed all government departments to actively participate in anti-polio campaigns and use facilities of the Afghan Red Crescent Societyinfo-icon and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Ghani also insisted on the role of religious scholars in the eradication of polio and instructed the Ministry of Public Health to train religious scholars regarding polio campaigns and recruit mobile vaccination teams.

“The government is committed to eliminating the disease and has established anti-polio committees in all provinces,” CEO  Dr. Abdullah Abdullah said at the video conference.

He asked the governors and provincial officials to inform the government leadership even if a single polio case was observed in their provinces.

According to the Ministry of Public Health, 19 polio cases were registered across the country during the past one year.
