CEO underlines Sino-Afghan efforts against terrorists

CEO underlines Sino-Afghan efforts against terrorists

May 16, 2016 - 15:22

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Extremist groups pose a shared threat to Afghanistaninfo-icon and China, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) has said, calling for concerted efforts to combat terrorism.

After his arrival in China on a three-day visit, Abdullah told diplomats students of the University of International Relations in Beijing to focus on terrorism in Afghanistan.

China and Afghanistan had a commonality of interests, he noted, emphasising attempts to stabilise the region. He underlined a joint Sino-Afghan campaign to address common concerns.

In response to a query from the only Afghan student at the university, the CEO said China enjoyed cordial relations with regional countries that had close links with the Talibaninfo-icon.

He believed Beijing, exercising its influence, could mount pressure on those countries to sincerely cooperate with the Afghan peace process. However, he did not name any country.

Abdullah opined China, a member of Quadrilateral Coordination Group (QCG), could play a key role in promoting reconciliation in Afghanistan.

“Though its security forces are capable of defending their homeland, Afghanistan has kept open its doors for talks with all insurgent groups,” the former foreign minister added.

Abdullah’s spokesman Javed Faial told Pajhwok Afghan News the CEO would meet the Chinese prime minister later in the day. Several agreements of cooperation are expected to be signed between the two sides.
