Beijing backs Kabul’s quest for SCO membership

May 18, 2016 - 14:50

BEIJING (Pajhwok): Chinese President Xi Jinping has praised Afghan security forces for their ongoing campaign against terrorism, supporting Afghanistaninfo-icon’s permanent membership of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), an official said on Wednesday.

The Chinese leader expressed the views during a meeting with Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Abdullah in Beijing, where the two sides agreed to deepen bilateral relation and cooperation in diverse fields, CEO’s deputy spokesman Javed Faisal said.

Abdullah highlighted the importance of the new Silk Road for Afghanistan, hoping restoration of the vital transit route would help revive the war-torn country’s glory and status in the region. Afghanistan would become a bridge between regional countries, he argued.

The CEO commended China’s efforts for pushing the Afghan peace process in the framework of the Quadrilateral Cooperation Group (QCG). He said the four nations had held four meetings, but failed achieve a breakthrough.

Abdullah hoped China would use its international influence to promote the fight against terrorism in a more effective manner and motivate regional countries into stoutly supporting efforts for the reconciliation drive in Afghanistan.

For regional stability he opined, peace in Afghanistan was essential and it was up to China to mount pressure on regional countries to strive for security.

Xi Jinping assured the CEO of China’s complete support for the unity government and said Beijing backed attempts at peace negotiation and fast-track development of the country.

China would support Kabulinfo-icon’s quest for permanent membership of the SCO. The Chinese president pledged support to Afghan security forces and lauded their sacrifices in the war on terrorism.
