JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Some provincial council members and tribal elders in eastern Nangarhar province on Saturday supported the peace talks with Gulbadin Hekmatyar-led Hezb-i-Islamiinfo-icon Afghanistaninfo-icon (HIA) and asked elements opposed to the process not to create hurdles.

Ajmal Umar, a provincial council member, said he invited tribal and jihadi commanders to support the peace talks between the HIA and the government.

He said Hekmatyar’s negotiations with the government would have a positive impact on the government’s reconciliation programme and would help bring stability to the country.

Dr. Lal Mohammad Durrani, deputy head of the provincial council, said peace talks with Hekmatyar was the desire of the people of Afghanistan and would have positive results.

“Some elements want to derail the process based on personal and ethnic differences. We want to tell them not to create hurdles to this process as peace is the desire of all Afghans.”

Another provincial council member Dr. Nasir Kamawal accused the former  Northern Allianceinfo-icon of creating hurdles in the way of peace talks with the HIA.

Nangarhar Peace Committee Director Haji Malak Nazir said they welcomed the draft peace deal reached between the HIA delegation and the Afghan government.

He said Hekmatyar’s peaceful return would positively impact the entire conflict and more militants would join the reconciliation process.

He said the HIA head was party to the Afghan conflict and his return would help subside the decades-long conflict in the country.

Tribal elders and religious leaders present at the gathering lauded Hekmatryar’s decision to hold peace talks with the government.
