JALALABAD (Pajhwok): First Vice-President Abdul Rashid Dostum on Sunday provided cash and food assistance to families of border policemen killed during Torkham border clashes.

A week back, Pakistani forces tried to construct a gate at the border to check what it called terrorist movements, but Afghan border guards resisted the attempt, sparking deadly clashes.

Troops exchanged intermittent firing for at least three days, leaving several security personnel dead and wounded on both sides. Three Afghan border troops were killed in the clashes.

Nangarhar governor’s spokesman, Attaullah Khogyani, told Pajhwok Afghan News a delegation of first VP Dostum arrived in Jalalabad with the aid for families of the fallen border guards.

He said the delegation, led by Dostum’s advisor Mohammad Nabi Ayubi, distributed $15,000 among the families.

The aid was distributed at the governor’s house in the presence of Governor Salim Khan Kunduzi and other officials.

Khogyani said Dostum also talked with the governor and the bereaved families over the telephone.

The VP praised bravery and sacrifices of border forces and called them national heroes.

Kunduzi thanked Dostum on behalf of the people of Nangarhar for supporting border forces.

Khoshal and Zia, fathers of the two martyred border policemen were present on the occasion and they said all their other family members were ready to sacrifice their lives for the protection of their country.

Meanwhile, Hamidullah Khyber, advisor to the Ministry of Border and Tribal Affairs, also donated $2,000 each to the three bereaved families.
