China striving for regional economic connectivity: Envoy

Sep 07, 2016 - 19:50

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): The Chinese ambassador in Kabulinfo-icon on Wednesday said Beijing was striving for regional economic development through Afghanistaninfo-icon’s development.

Deng Xijun was speaking at a gathering in Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of northern Balkh province, marking the arrival of the first train from China carrying 2,000 tonnes of goods at the Hiratan Port.

The Chinese envoy said creating economic connectivity between China and Afghanistan and the arrival of goods through a railroad was not an ordinary effort and China had decided to revive the centuries-old Silk Road.

He thanked Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan for being part of the economic connectivity effort and paving the way for the establishment of the vital railways track.

Xijun termed the railway line and the launch of first direct flight last week between Kabul and Beijing a tangible moment marking direct links between the two countries.

Mohammad Younis Mommand, deputy director of the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI), termed the establishment of the railway line key to improving economic ties between Afghanistan and China.

He hailed China as a good neighbor and facilitator in economic development of the war-torn country.

Musafir Quqandi, the spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce and Industries, said the railway track between China and Afghanistan crossed into Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan reaching Afghanistan’s Heratan Port.

He said the first train brought as many as 2,000 tonne goods of Afghan businessmen to the country.

He hoped the railroad would help increase trade activity and would leave a positive impact on Afghanistan exports and imports.
