Ghazni residents want security tightened during Eid

GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Some residents of southern Ghazni province have urged security officials to put in place elaborate security measures during Eidul Adha days in order to enable people to celebrate the occasion peacefully.

Mullahinfo-icon Mohammad Ismail, the provincial Ulemainfo-icon Council’s head, told Pajhwok Afghan News the security situation in Ghazni was not good.

Ismail called on Talibaninfo-icon to stop fighting and join the peace process for a better Afghanistaninfo-icon. He also requested the public to support security forces.

Khalihullah, a resident of Giro district, said he had come to Ghazni City for Eid shopping. He said clashes had been underway in his hometown over the past few days. He did not believe the religious festival would pass off peacefully, but urged the rebels to avoid violence during Eid days.

Wali Mohammad, a resident of Ghazni City, said people had suffered a lot due to insecurities and the government should at least put in place extraordinary security measures during the festival.

“Eid may not be celebrated in many parts of Ghazni city because the security situation is not good. Roads are littered with landmines and people cannot travel in vehicles.”

These people and others asked the government to tighten security measures during Eid days.

In this regard, deputy police chief Col. Asadullah Shajai said all needed security measures had been already put in place in Ghazni city ahead of the festival.

He called as essential people’s cooperation with security forces in maintain peace and order, saying in the absence of people’s support, security incidents could occur in some areas.

The security situation in Ghazni has recently deteriorated, with clashes between security forces and militants ongoing in some parts.
