Balkh residents complain against ALP personnel

Balkh residents complain against ALP personnel

Sep 13, 2016 - 09:13

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): The residents of some districts of northern Balkh province liken the Afghan Local Police (ALP) behavior to that of Talibaninfo-icon, accusing the personnel of mistreating the people.

ALP personnel have been deployed to some district mired in insecurity and lawlessness. The inhabitants of Chamtal district complain ALP officials are behaving like the Taliban, employing force against the masses.

Mohammad Ajan, one of the residents, said he hoped the security situation in his area would improve with the deployment of ALP, but no change had been seen so far in the district.

“Nobody is worse than the Taliban, but when someone behaves like the fighters, they are considered even worse and hatedmore by the people,” he remarked, saying ALP officials harassed locals all too often.

Mohammadullah, who belongs to Char Bolak district, claimed former commanders and warlords had been armed in the guise of ALP and they harassed people without good reason.

He believed if ALP men really resolved security issues, everyone in the area would feel happy and there would not be any problem for anyone. But, unfortunately, he saidthe personnel themselves were a headache for the people.

Syed Akbar, resident of Mazar-i-Sharif, the provincial capital, thought the performance of ALP personnel, if monitored and held accountable by higher-ups, would improve.

He said it was the responsibility of security officials to strive for the safety of people, not to harass them.

But Col. Abdul Raziq Qaderi, deputy police chief, rejected the allegations against ALP personnel as baseless. He said no body had complained formally against them so far.

Instead he claimed the ALP personnel fully cooperated with other security organs in maintaining the law and order in the province and helped address public issues.
