India renews commitment to peace in Afghanistan

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): India has reiterated its commitment to peace and prosperity in Afghanistaninfo-icon, calling the upcoming Heart of Asia Conference an important event aimed at regional cooperation.

The HoA Conference on Afghanistan is scheduled to be held in the Amritsar city of Punjabon December 4. In December 2015, the meeting was hosted by Pakistaninfo-icon, India’s arch-rival.

In the wake of a recent terror attack in the Indian-controlled zone of Kashmir, relations between the nuclear-armed sub-continental neighbours have plummeted to a new low.

After the attack on the Uri military base, India pointed an accusing finger at a Pakistan-based rebel outfit. The SAARCinfo-icon summit, which was to be held next month in Islamabad, was subsequently cancelled.

An Indian newspaper, citing the foreign ministry spokesman, reported New Delhi would welcome Pakistan’s participation of in the HoA conference on Afghanistan.

“We will welcome the participation of Pakistan,” the MEA spokesperson VikasSwaruptold The Asian Age. India hopes more than 40 countries and organisations will attend the event.

He added: “We are yet to receive an official confirmation from Pakistan and also the level of participation…We will certainly welcome all countries to Amritsar because we are committed to peace and prosperity in Afghanistan…”
