KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Afghan Red Crescent Societyinfo-icon (ARCS) on Wednesday expressed concern over the increasing number of children suffering from Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), saying at least 6,000 such kids awaited treatment.

Mohammad Saleem Bohramand, healthinfo-icon services head at ARCS, told a press conference here that over the past eight years, 11,200 children suffering from VSD had signed up for treatment with ARCS.

Of them, 5,200 children had been so far treated inside the country or abroad, he said, complaining about a lack of budget.

He said currently 6,000 more children with VSD were waiting to be treated but ARCS could not urgently arrange their treatment.

He said five to 15 children suffering from the heart disease daily came to the ARCS which was making efforts to treat 1,500 children in 2017 in India and Kabul’s hospitals with the help from India and some aid organisations.

He said three in 10 children died of the disease because of their families’ weak economical position and delayed treatment.

Shortness of breath, fast breathing, hard breathing, paleness, failure to gain weight, fast heart rate, sweating while feeding, frequent respiratory infections and bruising of fingertips, nose and tongue were symptoms of VSD, he added.

He said treatment of 1,000 children suffering from the disease cost up to $3.4 million; but this organization had the ability to provide $1million, which had been pledged by India.  He asked the government, aid organizations and wealthy people to assist ARCS in this regard.
