Diplomat killed by guard inside Afghan consulate

Feb 06, 2017 - 12:49

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): A diplmat was shot dead and two others were wounded inside the Afghan consulate in Pakistaninfo-icon’s port city of Karachi on Monday noon, officials said.

Two groups traded heavy gunfire inside the diplomatic mission, killing 3rd Secretary Zakki Abdu and wounding two others.

Police and Rangers personnel, who rushed to the consulate, entered the building and arrested one attacker. Rescue teams also arrived at the site.

The detainee was identified as Rahatullah, an Afghan citizen, and an SMG rifle seized from him, a senior police officer told reporters outside the consulate.

Police and Rangers cordoned off the sensitive area -- home to a number of foreign missions. A search operation is underway. A guard inside the consulate was blamed for the firing.

According to DIG South Azad Khan, the incident took place in the consulate’s lobby due to harsh exchanges. The detained guard is under investigation.

Ambassador Omar Zakhilwal ruled out terrorism, believing a personal dispute lead to what he called a criminal act. He confirmed the diplomat’s killing by the Afghan guard.
