Illegal arms contributing to Herat insecurity

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Public representatives and residents on Sunday said the existence of illegal arms contributed to insecurity and threatened peace in western Herat province.

Dr. Mehdi Hadid, who heads the provincial council’s security committee, said keeping, buying, selling of illegal arms threatened security of the province.

“Frequent murder incidents using illegal weapons show weapons are easily accessible which is very dangerous.” He said weapons with people should be registered and issued license.

The residents demanded crackdown on people carrying guns. Sharif Ahmad, a resident of Herat City, said: “I want the government to round up men having all illegal arms. Most people have arms without license.”

Police spokesman Abdul Ahad Walizada also confirmed the existence of illegal arms, but strongly rejected they were sold in the province.

Some experts termed the existence of illegal arms as dangerous because they played a role in creating in security in the province.

Abdul Qader Kamel, a political affairs expert, said: “I believe until the resources of insecurity exist, the situation will remain the same. Terror, kidnapping, murders and other crimes will increase,” he warned.

Most incidents of killing and kidnappings are blamed on men carrying illegal arms in Herat.
