Afghanistan, Australia sign $320m development pact

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani and Australia Prime Pinister Malcolm Turnbull on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding for the Afghanistaninfo-icon-Australia development partnership worth $320 million over four years to 2020.

Under the MoU, the two countries will co-operate on infrastructure, educationinfo-icon and employment of womeninfo-icon and girls, agricultureinfo-icon and water management, training of Afghan civil servants and anti-corruption initiatives, the Presidential Palace in Kabul said in a statement.

Ghani met the Australian PM at the parliament building. The president and his delegation was warmly received by the Australian prime minister. Both the sides discussed recent developments in Afghanistan, economic cooperation, the fight against terrorism, women’s and children’s rights and other issues of mutual interest.

Turnbull praised the Afghan government’s efforts at fighting the menace of terrorism, corruption and bringing reforms to government departments. He said Australia would standby Afghanistan in the international war against terrorism as a strategic partner.

President Ghani thanked the Australian leader for his warm reception and hospitality. He said the twin scourges of terrorism and extremism needed a joint international fight.

He said regional and other countries were required to share their resources with each other in the war against terrorism.

The Afghan leader said his country had achieved considerable achievements in rule of law, freedom of expression and human rights particularly of women and children.
