Ready to work for peace with Kabul: Gen. Bajwa

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The Pakistaninfo-icon army chief has renewed his commitment to peace in Afghanistaninfo-icon, promising to work together with the neighbouring country to the common objective of stability.

Chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, currently on an official visit to the United Kingdom, stressed the need for peace in Afghanistan at a meeting with his British counterpart.

On his arrival at the ministry of defence, Gen. Bajwa was received by Gen. Sir Nick Carter and given a guard of honour at the Horse Guards Square, according to an Inter-Services Public Rela­tions statement.

Bajwa held separate meetings with the British Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach; Special Representative on Afghanistan and Pakistan Owen Jenkins, and Resolute Support Mission (RSM) Commander Gen John Nicholson.

The regional geopolitical environmentinfo-icon, with particular reference to Afghanistan, came under discussion. The UK and RSM acknowledged the positive role being played by Pakistan and its army in peace and stability.

Gen Bajwa, calling peace in Afghanistan a shared interest, said Pakistan would continue playing its positive role and was ready to work closely with Afghanistan in this regard.

A border security mechanism was critically important and both countries needed to formulate it on priority, he said, urging Afghanistan to ensure control and management measures on its side.
