Refugee elders may get Pakistani citizenship

Refugee elders may get Pakistani citizenship

Apr 17, 2017 - 10:03

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The governor of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has indicated Afghan refugee elders living in Pakistaninfo-icon for the last three decades may be granted citizenship.

Iqbal Zafar Jhagra told participants of an event in Lahore on Sunday: “Elders of Afghan refugees who have been living in Pakistan for more than three decades and have developed relationships through inter-marriages may be granted citizenship.”

The governor also urged the government to grant refugees a ‘grace period’ before their repatriation so that they could wrap up their businesses in Pakistan.

He quoted the refugees’ elders as saying that since they had been living here for more than three decades, they had developed relationships with locals through inter-marriages and they might be considered for citizenship.

The refugees, against whom there were no complaints of misconduct or crime, should be considered for citizenship, the elders argued.

The new border management system was introduced after the killing of two Rangers personnel in the border town of Torkham . The system had helped check the movement of militants, he claimed.
