Arms supply to Taliban: Russia hits back at US

Arms supply to Taliban: Russia hits back at US

Apr 26, 2017 - 10:18

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok) Russia has once again angrily rejected as unsubstantiated the US allegation that it is supplying arms to the Afghan Talibaninfo-icon.

A day earlier, a US military official in Kabul was quoted as saying that Russia was providing machine guns and other medium-weight weapons to the Taliban.

But Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov hit back at the Trump administration for what he called “unprofessional and groundless remarks”.

At a media briefing in Moscow, the foreign minister said the US accusations were intended to divert attention from its plans for a regime change in Syria.

“I am confident that those in the United States who are paid for supplying their national leaders with reliable intelligence know only too well that these allegations are untrue,” he remarked.

TASS news agency quoted Lavrov as asking Taliban to end the armed confrontation and join the process of peace talks. "The Taliban must join the nationwide dialogue on the basis of the criteria endorsed by the UN."

Reconciliation in Afghanistaninfo-icon could not be promoted unless the dialogue was based on these principles, Lavrov explained, asking the US to stop trying to shift the blame.
