No Afghan migrant killed in Istanbul: Consulate

No Afghan migrant killed in Istanbul: Consulate

May 17, 2017 - 21:56

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Afghan Consulate General in Istanbul has said it has tasked a committee with analyzing Sunday’s night incident in which a group of people attacked an Afghan migrant.

The incident in Istanbul’s Fatih district on May 15 took place at the funeral of a man killed one day before, leading the police to calm the crowd down by dispersing them with paint capsules.

Tension arose after a 24-year-old local man, Ramazan Şahin, was killed during a brawl between locals and migrants living in Istanbul’s Sultangazi district late on May 14.

The brawl was reportedly ignited after a group of Syrian and Afghan migrants heckled womeninfo-icon in the İsmetpaşa neighborhood of the district.

The consulate in a statement said several foreigners, including Afghans, suffered injuries in the brawl, but no Afghan was killed.

The Afghan consul general said baseless news and sharing of images and videos that did not relate to the incident were causing anxiety among Afghans.

Various meetings with Turkish officials including deputy governor of Istanbul as well as immigration officials and senior police officers had taken place to evaluate the situation after the incident.

The Turkish police had arrested more than 300 migrants from different countries in connection with the incident.
