Hekmatyar warns against udermining the system

Hekmatyar warns against udermining the system

Jun 08, 2017 - 17:53

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Hizb-i-Islami Afghanistaninfo-icon (HIA) head Gulbadin Hekmatyar said on Thursday weakening the current system was not in interest of the country and the nation.

Hekmatyar expressed the views at a press conference following recent incidents in Kabul. All people should work together in a way acceptable to all for changing the system, he suggested.

Attempts made in the past by some elements to change the system had failed, the former prime minister recalled, saying his party would not allow anyone to bring down the political system by force.

“We have neither any share in this government and have nor requested for partnership. But we honestly and unconditionally support this system for ending the ongoing war,” he remarked.

He suggested war could be ended if HIA’s wide influence was used. Those who talk about the system change should ask themselves what alternatives were available, he said.

“Evidence shows recent Kabul attacks, in which hundreds of Afghans suffered casualties, are aimed to disrupt the peace process. The enemies of peace are behind these attacks and they want the war to continue,” he said.

Pointing to protests after a string of attacks in Kabul, Hekmatyar said peaceful demonstration was the right of every Afghan and he defended the protestors.

However, he condemned those who take to the streets with weapons to display their power, disrespect people, provoke residents, exchange fire with police and oblige security forces to take punitive action.

In response to a question about elections, Hekmatyar said his party was interested in taking part in the presidential and parliamentary ballots.

But he said the creation of an independent and acceptable election commission was urgently needed.
