Situation in Afghanistan not well, admits Tillerson

Situation in Afghanistan not well, admits Tillerson

Jun 15, 2017 - 08:25

WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): The Trump administration is looking at a long-term solution to the conflict in Afghanistan, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told lawmakers on Wednesday.

“We have an Afghanistaninfo-icon policy, under review as well. In the interim, though, we have had interagency discussions with the president about how to preserve the opportunity for a long-term solution,” he said.

During his testimony, the secretary pledged the US would never allow Afghanistan becoming a platform for terrorism against the United States or certainly other nations.

“That work we expect to complete over the coming weeks, review it with the president, make a final policy decision,” he told lawmakers in response to a question.

He admitted the current situation in Afghanistan was not well. He acknowledged the need for taking steps to prevent further deterioration as the administration got its new policies in place.

“What we're following now are the policies of the prior administration, and we need to take some steps to stem the effects of those while we get our policies in place,” Tillerson added.

Congressman Dana Rohrabacher warned if the US did not succeed in Afghanistan, it would be all because of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISIinfo-icon).

“Afghanistan looks like it's not going in the right direction. And there are some creative ways to handle this. We continue to have troops involved there, but some people are calling for more troops.

“I hope that we look for other methods rather than sending American troops into Afghanistan,” he remarked, calling Pakistan a source of terrorism in that part of the world.
