LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): The Talibaninfo-icon insurgents have launched a coordinated attack on the Greshk district of southern Helmand province, a security official said on Thursday.

The official, who wished to go unnamed, told Pajhwok Afghan News the militants initiated the assault on Wednesday night.  The attack began with the detonation of three vehicle-borne bombs.

According to the source, the attacks were still underway in Aab Bashak, Adam Khan and Dasht areas around the district centre. He feared casualties but did not have exact numbers.

Mohammad Saleem Lodi, the district chief, acknowledged the attack, saying the Taliban’s vehicle-borne bombs were destroyed in airstrikes before they were detonated.

Meanwhile, Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi said the fighters had launched an all-out assault on the district and had captured some checkpoints and arms besides inflicted heavy casualties on the security personnel.
