WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis has not yet taken a decision on setting the troop numbers in Afghanistaninfo-icon, where militant-linked violence continues to surge, an official said.

“This is an authority that was delegated to him by the president. He is considering that, but he is going to do that only with a thorough understanding of what the strategy is,” a Pentagon spokesman said.

Navy Capt Jeff Davis told reporters on Monday: “There's a broader South Asia strategy review that's going on right now. That will inform any decisions he makes … about troops and other things.”

He strongly condemned the Kabulinfo-icon suicide bombing, saying the cruel attacks revealed the true nature of the Talibaninfo-icon. The killing of civilians in a crowded Kabul area showed the suffering the militants brought to innocent Afghans, he added.

Meanwhile US lawmakers also condemned the Trump administration for not having a strategy on Afghanistan and Pakistaninfo-icon. “I am concerned that, after six months in office, Trump has offered no clear or compelling strategy for how his administration will approach the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan,” said Senator Ben Cardin, Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“The United States has sacrificed greatly in the struggle to fight terrorist groups and violent extremism in this part of the worldinfo-icon,” he said.

Senator John McCain said it was disgraceful that the United States still did not have a strategy on Afghanistan.

Congressman Adam Kinzinger condemned the Kabul attack as gruesome and mourned the victims. “We need a strategy in Afghanistan to help stop the violence and defeat this terrorism.”
