2 US soldiers killed in Kandahar suicide attack

Aug 02, 2017 - 12:40

KANDAHAR (Pajhwok): Two US troops were killed on Wednesday when their convoy came under attack in southern Kandahar province, the Pentagon confirmed.

“Two US service members were killed in action in Kandahar, Afghanistaninfo-icon, when their convoy came under attack,” Pentagon spokesman Navy Captain Jeff Davis said. “US Forces Afghanistan will provide additional information as it becomes available,” he added.

A suicide bomber detonated his explosives-laden pick up vehicle against a NATOinfo-icon forces’ convoy near the capital of southern Kandahar province on Wednesday, local officials said.

The attack took place in front of the National Security Quick Reaction Unit base on the airport road in the limits of the 5th police district of Kandahar City at 12pm.

Exact figures about the casualties in the attack could not be ascertained despite the passage of several hours.

Kandahar police spokesman Zia Durrani told Pajhwok Afghan New the NATO convoy was heading to the airfield from Kandahar City when it came under attack.

He said the attacker was in a pick-up vehicle loaded explosives. Durrani said the foreign troops had suffered casualties in the attack, but he had no figures.

Eyewitness said the blast was so powerful that it jerked the entire area. One of the NATO vehicles was burning after the blast, the witnesses said.

Samiullah, a labor who was busy in a construction work along the airport near the blast site, said he saw ambulances and helicopters arriving at the scene after the blast.

“A number of people were taken to the helicopter, but I don’t know they were dead or wounded,” he said.

After the blast, the Kandahar-Spin Boldak highway remained closed for a few hours and during that period, a number of helicopters were seen landing and flying back.

Foreign troops pointed guns at people to keep them away from the attack site and journalists were also not allowed to cover the scene.

A day after the bombing, a brief statement from the US military in Afghanistan on Thursday said the injured were in stable condition.

The Talibaninfo-icon claimed responsibility for the attack, with their spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahamdi saying the blast destroyed two armored vehicles and killed 15 soldiers onboard.

However, his claim could not be varied from independence sources.

American and Romanian troops are based at the airfield in Kanahar. The foreign troops come under attack in the area after a long time.

The foreign troops were returning to their base after attending the weekly security meeting at the governor’s house.
