PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): A man was killed and dozens of people were wounded on Monday night when an explosive-laden fruit truck exploded in Lahore, the capital of Pakistaninfo-icon’s Punjab province.

The body of a man was recovered from the debris during a rescue operation after the blast that led to the collapse of the roof of a nearby building, officials said.

A baby trapped under the debris was recovered by the rescuers. Scores of vehicles were damaged in the blast, which smashed windowpanes in nearby buildings and left at least 45 people wounded.

Witnesses said the powerful explosion damaged more than 100 vehicles, including cars, mini-trucks and motorcycles parked at the stand. The blast was heard in several areas of the city.

Police said initial investigation suggested the truck was carrying crates of apricot from Swat to Lahore. The truck had been parked at the stand for the last three days.

The injured were taken to Services and Mian Munshi hospitals from where 12 were discharged after being administered first medical aid. Four people with life-threatening injuries were evacuated to Mayo Hospital.
