Aug 14, 2017 - 21:29

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): The Helmand-Kandahar highway has been in a terrible condition due continued incidents of violence on the route in recent years, with passengers bearing the brunt of the situation.

Ali Jan, a driver, told Pajhwok Afghan News the Helmand-Kandahar road had been damaged the most in recent years and driving on it had become a difficult task.

“The road is in a dilapidated condition, vehicles often develop technical faults,” he said.

He said the government should take urgent measures for reconstructioninfo-icon of the vital road.

Another Driver Mohammad said the road had been destroyed due to roadside blasts.

The road’s condition would further deteriorate and would cost more if the government did not repair it, he said.

Abdul Majid Akhunzada, deputy head of the provincial council, said people often complained against the dilapidated condition of the road and they had shared the issue with the authorities concerned.

“We often write to the Public Works Ministry and ask them to reconstruct the road.”

Ahlullah Edi, public works director, said the Helmand-Kandahar road was not the only one to be destroyed due to the ongoing conflict as many other main highways had also been affected.

He said 400 kilometers of asphalted roads, including the Helmand-Kandahar road, had been destroyed in the conflict in provinces.

The public works director said besides landmines, heavy weight vehicles also contributed to the road’s destruction. He, however, said recently a scale was installed on the road to restrict overloading.
