Riyadh denies seeking mediation with Tehran

Riyadh denies seeking mediation with Tehran

Aug 16, 2017 - 14:56

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) on Thursday denied seeking third-party mediation in talks with the Iranian government.

The oil-rich kingdom spurned news reports regarding Riyadh’s plan to seek third-party mediation with Iran to rehabilitate fragile relation.

On Sunday, Iraqi Interior Minister said in Tehran he had attended a meeting in which the Saudi prince asked Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Alebadi to mediate between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

A statement from the Saudi government reiterated its historic stance that Tehran supported terrorism and extremism in the region and continued meddling in other countries’ affairs.

The statement added talks with the present Iranian government were a futile exercise and Tehran had no respect for diplomatic principles and international law. Iran always lied and hide the truth, it alleged.

The Saudi government called Iran a threat to international peace and stability, demanding the global community cut ties with the ‘terrorist state’ until it accepted UN principles and international law.
