US declines answering Taliban’s open letter to Trump

US declines answering Taliban’s open letter to Trump

Aug 16, 2017 - 11:25

WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): The Talibaninfo-icon are behind destabilising activities in Afghanistaninfo-icon, the United States said on Tuesday, refusing to answer open letter from the militant movement to President Donald Trump to withdraw troops from the country.

“Yeah, I certainly have (seen the Taliban letter).  So I’m not going to comment on any statements put out by the Taliban on that,” State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert told reporters at a news conference.

“What is going on in Afghanistan is a result of Taliban (activities).  We’ve seen, and there was a report out not that long ago about the increase in attacks on civilians, which largely included womeninfo-icon and children,” she said.

She added: “Let’s not lose focus that the Taliban are behind many of those attacks, the increase in civilian casualties.  That undermines the Afghan population and also the Afghan government, so let’s not lose focus.”

The spokesperson said the Trump administration was still conducting a review of its Afghan policy. There were a lot of various options on the table, with the US government considering its Afghan policy, she said.
