Civilians among 6 killed in Helmand suicide bombing

Aug 17, 2017 - 12:14

LASKARGAH (Pajhwok): Three civilians and as many Talibaninfo-icon insurgents have been killed as a result of a bomb explosion in the Greshk district of southern Helmand province, an official said on Thursday.

Omar Zwak, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the explosion took place on Wednesday night. “The militants wanted to carry out a suicide attack on the 6th Battalion of third brigade through a Humavee.”

But the vehicle was hit with a rocket by Afghan soldiers before they could reach the target, Zwak said, adding two assailants trying to enter the base after the explosion were shot dead by the military personnel. Three civilians and three assailants were killed and three soldiers wounded.

Mohammad Saleem, the district’s administrative chief, confirmed the explosion and casualties in Greshk. He said the militant attack was thwarted by the security forces.

The Taliban, who control Baghran, Deshu, Musa Qala, Nawzad, Khanshin and Sangin districts of Helmand, have so far said nothing about the attack.
