A dozen policemen dead, 15 wounded in Nawa fighting

Aug 20, 2017 - 01:06

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): A dozen police personnel have been killed and 15 others wounded in Talibaninfo-icon attacks on security check-posts in the Nawa district of southern Helmand province, a well-placed source said on Saturday.

The ensuing gunbattles, lasting until 3am, erupted a kilometre from the district centre late Friday night, a Nawa-based official confided to Pajhwok Afghan News. The dead included a police post commander named Sher Mohammad.

At least two police checkpoints collapsed as a result of the assaults, which also led to the closure of the Nawa-Lashkargah highway, revealed the source, who requested not to be named.

Abdul Baqi Khan, a member of the Nawa district social council, confirmed the fighting. He also said a large number of security personnel had suffered casualties in the clashes, which lasted several hours.

However, Helmand police chief Brig. Gen. Abdul Ghaffar Sapi put the police toll at five dead and six wounded. He said the Taliban had also suffered heavy casualties in firefights as well as air strikes.

Meanwhile, sources in the Emergency Hospital in Lashkargah -- the provincial capital -- confirmed receiving 15 wounded individuals from the scene of fighting in Nawa.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi claimed 17 policemen were killed in the fighting took place near the district centre. However, he said nothing about Taliban’s casualties.
