Mattis, Stoltenberg in Kabul for high-level talks

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): US Defense Secretary James Mattis and NATOinfo-icon Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg flew in to Kabul on Wednesday for talks with senior Afghan leaders.

Mattis will meet President Ashraf Ghani and other cabinet members, a source in the Presidential Palace confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News.

On his first trip to Kabul after the announcement of America's new strategy for Afghanistaninfo-icon, the secretary is also expected to meet Resolute Support mission commander Gen. John Nicholson.

After formal talks, Mattis would give a joint media briefing with Ghani and the NATO secretary general.

In August, President Trump rolled out the new US policy to win the war in Afghanistan. He outline a regional approach to eradicate terrorism and stabilize the situation in Afghanistan.

The NATO chief would also hold talks President Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, as well as other high-level officials. Discussions will focus on the NATO-Afghanistan partnership, including the ongoing NATO-led Resolute Support mission.

According to a statement from the alliance, the secretary general will address Resolute Support troops and meet members of Afghan civil societyinfo-icon.
