UNAMA condemns Kabul attack as unjustified

UNAMA condemns Kabul attack as unjustified

Nov 16, 2017 - 18:55

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistaninfo-icon (UNAMA) on Thursday condemned a suicide bombing that killed nine civilians, including one child, and injured 16 others in Kabul.

The attack took place in Aspa Square in the Labe Jar area, where a large gathering of the Jamiat-i-Islamiinfo-icon party had just ended and attendees were leaving the conference hall, the UNAMA said in a statement, citing preliminary findings.

The Islamic State- claimed responsibility for the attack. “This attack in Kabul today is totally unacceptable; it is an act of terror and a serious violation of humanitarian law,” said Tadamichi Yamamoto, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of UNAMA.

“At a time when Afghanistan is facing so many challenges, and with so many Afghans yearning for peace, such attacks simply cannot be justified,” he stressed.

He said the use of explosive weapons in civilian-populated areas must stop, without exception. “The United Nations maintains that all parties to the conflict must strictly adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law to take all feasible measures to protect civilians from harm.”

The UNAMA expressed condolences to the families and colleagues of those killed in the attack and wished speedy recovery to those injured.

It was not immediately known if senior members of the Jamiat were among the victims. Soon after the attack, Balkh Governor Atta Mohammad Noor, also senior member of the party, alleged some elements within the government were behind the attack. But he did not elaborate.
